Java Review

Java or Core Java Tutorial or Java Programming Tutorial is a widely used robust technology. Let's start learning Java from basic questions like what is Another compounding problem was that early computer languages such as BASIC, COBOL, and FORTRAN were not designed around structured principles. Instead, they relied upon the GOTO as a primary means of program control examples.

What is Java

Java is a programming language and a platform.

Java is a high level, robust, secured and object-oriented programming language.

Platform: Any hardware or software environment in which a program runs, is known as a platform. Since Java has its own runtime environment (JRE) and API, it is called platform.

J2EE (Enterprise Edition)— Used to create very large programs that run on servers managing heavy traffic and complicated transactions. These programs are the backbone of many online services, such as banking, e-commerce, and B2B (business-to-business) trading systems.

Java Example

Let's have a quick look at java programming example. A detailed description of hello Java example is given in next page.

class First
   public static void main(String args[])

Where is java used?

There are many tpye of where Java is used in the world, starting from commercial e-commerce website to android apps, from scientific application to Desktop applications like electronic trading systems, from games like Minecraft to desktop applications like Eclipse luna, Netbeans, weblogis and IntelliJ, from an open source library to J2ME apps j2EE etc. Let's see each of them in more detail.

  1. Java Software Tools.
  2. Java software and development tools are written and developed in Java e.g. Eclipse luna , InetelliJ Idea and Netbans IDE. I think they are also use full desktop applications written in Java. Though there was time when Swing was very popular to write thick client, mostly in financial service sector and Investment banks. Now days, Java FX is gaining popularity.

  3. Java Web Applications such as a
  4. Java web Application is also big on E- commerce and web application space. You have a lot of RESTfull services or Soap being created using Spring MVC, Struts 2.0 and Hibernate 4.0 similar frameworks. Even simple Servlet, JSP and Struts based web applications are quite popular on various government projects. Many of government, NIC, healthcare, insurance, education, defense and several other department have their java web application built in Java.

  5. Enterprise Applications such as banking applications.
  6. Mobile
  7. Embedded System
  8. Smart Card
  9. Robotics
  10. Games etc.

Types of Java Applications

There are mainly 4 types of applications that can be created using java programming:

  1. Standalone Application
  2. It is also known as desktop application or window-based application. An application that we need to install on every machine such as media player, antivirus etc. AWT and Swing are used in java for creating standalone applications.

  3. Web Application
  4. An application that runs on the server side and creates dynamic page, is called web application. Currently, servlet, jsp, struts, jsf etc. technologies are used for creating web applications in java.

  5. Enterprise Application
  6. An application that is distributed in nature, such as banking applications etc. It has the advantage of high level security, load balancing and clustering. In java, EJB is used for creating enterprise applications.

  7. Mobile Application
  8. An application that is created for mobile devices. Currently Android and Java ME are used for creating mobile applications.

Java Platforms / Editions

There are 4 platforms or editions of Java:

  1. Java SE (Java Standard Edition)
  2. It is a java programming platform. It includes Java programming APIs such as java.lang,,, java.util, java.sql, java.math etc. It includes core topics like OOPs, String, Regex, Exception, Inner classes, Multithreading, I/O Stream, Networking, AWT, Swing, Reflection, Collection etc.

  3. Java EE (Java Enterprise Edition)
  4. It is an enterprise platform which is mainly used to develop web and enterprise applications. It is built on the top of Java SE platform. It includes topics like Servlet, JSP, Web Services, EJB, JPA etc.

  5. Java ME (Java Micro Edition)
  6. It is a micro platform which is mainly used to develop mobile applications.

  7. JavaFx
  8. It is used to develop rich internet applications. It uses light-weight user interface API.
